tess of the d'urbervilles

Did anyone else watch this on Masterpiece? I've never read anything by Thomas Hardy, but are all his books this depressing?

Yes. If you're a glutton for punishment, you could continue on and read Jude the Obscure.

I hope you find something else you like much better!

Yeah, no thanks. I'll stick to something lighter. Like Crime and Punishment.

I haven't read the books, but saw a commercial & the title alone sounded like something I'd love that my hubby certainly would not. Oh well.

I read the book many, many years ago, possibly when I was in college. I knew it ended badly for Tess, but could not remember any of the details. Once again I mourned for Tess. It all seemed so unfair, when she tried so hard to do the right things. I guess that was the point, society and church rules were so rigid and unfair to someone like Tess,
